The Aquatic Ecology journal is self-described as "A Multidisciplinary Journal Relating to Processes and Structures at Different Organizational Levels."
The following research is published in the December issue of the quarterly journal publication with the cover of the journal being an image from research conducted in the SAFL EcoLab.
SAFL student researchers win national environmental design competition

Four graduate students from the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering (CEGE) and Water Resources recently won a series of environmental design competitions at the regional and national level. The four students - Abigail Tomasek, Anne Wilkinson, Maria Garcia-Serrana, and Zeinab Takbiri - are also all Ph.D. students at St. Anthony Falls Laboratory (SAFL).
Hang Wang Receives Lorenz G. Straub Award

Hang Wang, a Postdoctoral Research Fellow from the University of Queensland, Australia, was awarded the Lorenz G. Straub Award during a special SAFL seminar on October 11, 2016. The Lorenz G. Straub Award is awarded annually for the most meritorious thesis in hydraulic engineering, ecohydraulics, or a related field. Applicants are internationally entered and nominations may be made by any recognized civil and environmental engineering program in the world.
Jon Schwenk receives PhD for dissertation titled, "Meandering rivers: interpreting dynamics from planform geometry and the secret lives of migrating meanders"

PhD candidate Jon Schwenk successfully defended his dissertation in Civil, Environmental, and Geo-Engineering on Thursday, August 18th, 2016. He is advised by Professor Efi-Foufoula-Georgiou of the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory and the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo-Engineering. Jon was also SAFL's 2016 Alvin Anderson Award winner. Congratulations, Dr. Schwenk!!

Masters student Nicholas Evans awarded Nels Nelson Memorial Fellowship

Nicholas Evans, Masters Candidate in the Department of Earth Sciences and student at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, was awarded the NelsNelson Memorial Fellowship during a special SAFL seminar on April 19th, 2016. The Nels Nelson Memorial Fellowship is awarded annually to a University of Minnesota student pursuing her/his Master’s degree in a water resources-related discipline at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory. Special consideration is given to students involved in hydraulics, hydrology, sediment transport, water quality or surface water management.

PhD candidate Ashish Karn successfully defended his dissertation in Mechanical Engineering on Thursday, April 14th, 2016. Karn's advisors include Dr. Roger Arndt, Professor Emeritus of the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory and the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo-Engineering, and Dr. Jiarong Hong, Professor of the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory and the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
