Identification of Neurobiomarkers for the Optimization of Deep Brain Stimulation and Neurosurgery

Despite the recent advances in neural engineering to process oscillatory brain activity in different scenarios such as brain machine interfaces, limited progress has been done towards the interpretation of oscillatory neural activity (such as LFPs, iEEG or ECoG) with computational intelligence for clinical decision making. In this talk, I will summarize our efforts towards mapping of subcortical and cortical regions during awake brain surgeries using machine learning and neural signal processing. Additionally, I provide additional perspectives regarding the use of oscillatory neural dynamics for the estimation of consciousness.

Brief Bio of Prof. Ince

Nuri Firat Ince is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Neurosurgery at Mayo Clinic, Rochester. He obtained his PhD degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Cukurova University, Turkey with a focus on biosignal processing and adaptive wavelets. Between 2005-2008 he was a post-doctoral associate at the neuroscience department of University of Minnesota. Before joining University of Houston in 2013, Dr. Ince worked a research assistant professor at the University of Minnesota and had joint appointments with Neurosurgery and ECE departments. The research in Dr. Ince’s clinical neural engineering laboratory includes invasive brain machine interfaces and neurobiomarker discovery for improving neurosurgical therapies in Parkinson Disease and Epilepsy. In addition, with an interdisciplinary team involving collaborators from Texas Medical Center, he is currently investigating the efficacy of using state of the art high density grids and neural decoding algorithms for the improvement of brain surgeries in glioma and epilepsy.
