Mission and Objectives

The degrees offered by ECE, Bachelor of Electrical Engineering, and Bachelor of Computer Engineering are accredited by ABET, the Engineering Accreditation Commission. Our mission and objectives for each major as outlined below are designed to meet ABET standards and the University’s mission.

BACHELOR OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING DEGREE

OUR MISSION

The mission of the Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (BEE) is consistent with the Mission of the University of Minnesota in Teaching and Learning, and the Teaching Mission of the College of Science and Engineering: to provide rigorous and stimulating education in electrical engineering, to maintain international pre-eminence in creation and dissemination of knowledge, and to serve the private and public sectors through collective experience and expertise of faculty and students.

OUR PROGRAM EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

  • Our graduates will excel in technical jobs with increasing responsibility and authority early in their careers.
  • A significant fraction of our students will pursue graduate studies in the first several years following graduation
  • Our recent graduates will hold their professional responsibilities in high regard, giving back to their communities and society
  • Our graduates will engage in lifelong learning

OUR STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

In the course of successfully completing the BEE degree, our students will demonstrate the following outcomes:

  • an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
  • an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
  • an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  • an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
  • an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
  • an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
  • an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies
