Scarlata named Distinguished McKnight Professor

Claudia Scarlata was named as a 2022 Distinguished McKnight Professor. She was recognized for her significant contributions to the study of the sources responsible for the last major transformation of the Universe, only a few hundred million years after the Big Bang, and to our understanding of the processes that regulate the growth of galaxies over cosmic time.
McLeod Awarded IUPAP Young Scientist Prize

Kelly named McKnight Land-Grant Professor

Assistant Professor Patrick Kelly, has been awarded a McKnight Land-Grant Professorship, which recognizes outstanding accomplishments and promise among the the University's assistant professors.
Laboratory Manager Retires

William “Bill” Miller recently retired from his position as Laboratory Manager at the Ash River research facility in northern Minnesota. Miller began working for the School in 1987 His career at the School began with what was supposed to be a temporary 6-8 week job that lasted for 34 years. Miller was working in civil construction in Ely, Minnesota–building houses, roads and septic systems–when he was brought in to help inspect some work being done for Professor Marvin Marshak on the Soudan II neutrino experiment in an old iron mine near Tower, Minnesota.
WiPA receives APS Grant

The Women in Physics and Astronomy (WiPA) group at the School has received a grant from the American Physical Society (APS) to expand their programs and outreach. The group requested a grant in order to sponsor a colloquium speaker and to facilitate visits of WiPA in middle schools and high schools. Jenna Freedberg, WiPA Coordinator, said that the grant will allow them to do up to 14 in-school visits in the community.
School Staff Member in the Great American Thinkoff

Angela Stehr was one of four finalists to answer the question “Is it Better to Win or Play by the Rules?” in the Great American Thinkoff, held annually in New York Mills, MN. Stehr is a Program Specialist for the Minnesota Institute of Astrophysics and is a self-described “Thinkoff Groupie.”
