Gerard Salter awarded 2018 Alvin Anderson award
This past Tuesday, February 20th, SAFL was pleased to award the 2017-2018 Alvin G. Anderson award to Gerald Salter, PhD Candidate in Earth Sciences at the University of Minnesota. The Alvin G. Anderson Award is awarded annually to University of Minnesota students pursuing graduate studies in water resources. Special consideration is given to students involved in the sediment transportation field, which was Dr. Anderson's specialty when a professor at the University of Minnesota from 1950 until 1975.
Gerard was awarded $500 to buy books related to his field of interest and a certificate. He is advised by SAFL Professors Chris Paola and Vaughan Voller. His research is focused on how water and sediment are partitioned at bifurcations within river deltas. He has used a combination of theory and experiments to investigate how deltas switch their dominant flow pathways over time. Better understanding of the flow partitioning in deltas is important for efforts to use sediment to naturally build new land to counteract relative sea level rise.
Several members of the Anderson family attended the ceremony.
The award presentation was followed by a Distinguished Lecture given by Dr. Jeff Nittrouer, Assistant Professor in Earth, Environmental, and Engineering at Rice University.
