PhD student Jackie Taylor receives 2019 Heinz G. Stefan Fellowship
Jackie Taylor, PhD Candidate in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo-Engineering (CEGE) and student at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, was awarded the Heinz G. Stefan Fellowship during a special SAFL seminar on April 9th, 2019. The Heinz G. Stefan Fellowship is given to a University of Minnesota student pursuing graduate studies in water resources engineering who is studying at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory. Special consideration is given to students involved in environmental hydraulics.
Jackie received a monetary award to support her research, a certificate, and recognition on the SAFL website and in future presentations of the award. She is advised by SAFL Professors Miki Hondzo and Vaughan Voller, both of CEGE. Her research focuses on community formation and vertical distribution of the cyanobacteria Microcystis. The cyanobacteria is heavily influenced by turbulence, temperature, and light. More importantly, Microcystis seem to respond to changing environmental conditions.
The award presentation was followed by a Distinguished Lecture given by Dr. Mark Stacey, Department Chair and Henry and Joyce Miedema Professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of California- Berkeley.
