Santosh Kumar chosen as 2018-2019 Edward Silberman Recipient

Santosh Kumar, a Mechanical Engineering PhD candidate at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory was awarded the 2018-2019 Edward Silberman Award during a special SAFL seminar on November 13th, 2018. The Silberman Award is awarded annually for outstanding research at SAFL. The fellowship award is paid for in honor of Edward Silberman by his family and friends to acknowledge his contribution to the lab. Santosh received the award for his research titled, "Novel optical diagnostic tools for flow measurement near complex interfaces."

The focus of Santosh’s research is to develop novel optical diagnostic techniques to enable measurements near complex interfaces such as liquid-gas boundaries, moving interfaces, and granular beds. His work has led to development of novel image processing algorithms to enable PIV measurements across moving curved liquid interface as well as digital inline holography for high-resolution 3D flow measurements. Santosh is advised by Associate Professor Jiarong Hong in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The award ceremony was followed with a presentation by the keynote speaker, Dr. Mark Schmeeckle from Arizona State University. His presentation was titled, "Motion of sediment at the bed of rivers." Read more about his presentation.
