SAFL, Mechanical Engineering welcome two new faculty members

Following an extensive national search conducted during the spring of 2012, Dr. Jiarong (Jerry) Hong and Dr. Lian Shen have been selected to join the faculty of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) and the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory (SAFL), as assistant professor and associate professor with tenure, respectively. Professors Hong and Shen, who join the University of Minnesota in August 2012, will have their tenure home in the ME department and conduct the bulk of their research at SAFL.

Landscapes are shaped by the interplay between tectonics and climate. The mass fluxes associated with the physical and chemical processes acting across the landscape involve the production and transport of sediment and solutes from the uplands to the lowlands.

St. Anthony Falls Laboratory (SAFL) welcomed the University’s chief academic officer, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Karen Hanson, for a special visit and tour of the facility on April 6. Joined by Steven Crouch, dean of the College of Science and Engineering, SAFL Director Fotis Sotiropoulos shared about the laboratory’s history, and the mission and goals for fluid mechanics research, education and outreach.

The deputy director of the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Office of International Science and Engineering, David Stonner, visited the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory (SAFL) on February 16. Stonner’s tour of SAFL was part of a larger visit to the Twin Cities region to make the keynote presentation at the University of Minnesota’s inaugural International Research Conference hosted by the U’s Global Programs and Strategy Alliance.
