TLI Capstone Winner: Samuel Wosika, ST Program
This spring our TLI Class of 2024 handed out awards for the best capstone projects for each of our three graduate programs: Security Technologies (ST), Medical Device Innovation (MDI) and Management of Technology (MOT). The capstone projects are when students take what they've learned during their two years in the program and apply it to a real-world business problem. This week we're showcasing the capstone winners for each cohort.
First up is Samuel Wosika, the capstone winner for our Security Technologies program. Sam's project is titled "The Rise of AI in Cybersecurity: Fostering Awareness for Effective Defense". Here is how Sam described his project.
This capstone project focused on the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in cybersecurity, specifically generative AI. While technologies like ChatGPT have shown remarkable benefits, they have also been weaponized by malicious actors to create sophisticated hacking tools such as WormGPT, FraudGPT, and HackGPT. Given the lack of published research on these emerging threats, I undertook the challenge of ethically testing these tools myself, revealing their alarming capabilities. These tools provide step-by-step instructions for hacking without any limitations or safeguards. Additionally, I interviewed two former TLI graduates, now security leaders in local enterprises, to discuss the reduced barrier to entry for hacking and the threats posed by these tools. The research culminated in recommendations for defending against these threats, emphasizing the integration of AI into cyber defense strategies alongside traditional methods.
The MSST program has equipped me with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in cybersecurity and its real-world applications. Key aspects of the program include rigorous training in research methodologies, development of a professional network, and practical tools for tackling security challenges, such as the Risk Assessment and the Weight of Reasons framework. This enriching experience has prepared me to confidently address complex security issues and contribute meaningfully to the field of cybersecurity. Within the TLI program, the professors, staff, and leadership exemplify an exceptional blend of expertise and support, making them some of the most valuable individuals I have ever had the pleasure to work with.
