Phil Engen, Education and Outreach Director for the Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC), is among six recipients of a 2023 College of Science and Engineering (CSE) Outstanding Service Award. These awards are presented annually by the College to recognize and reward exceptional performance and contributions by academic professional and administrative staff, civil service employees, labor-represented staff, as well as work groups.

Each award consists of a one-time monetary award and a certificate of recognition. Individual award winners receive a $1,000 award, and each member of a work group receives $500.

In his role, Engen has been responsible for overseeing a set of programs aimed at increasing the overall STEM workforce, including the Research Experience for Undergraduate (REU) and Research Experience for Teachers (RET). He has also participated in many other activities that amplify the impact of the MRSEC on educational activities in the K-16 space across the United States.
