Earning your degree in data science opens exciting career opportunities across a variety of industries, including big tech, medicine, finance, and business management. Our graduates have a leg up in the workforce, bringing state-of-the-art methods for treating big data that will impact the next generation of big data technology. Collaborating with faculty from departments and institutes across the University of Minnesota, including Computer Science, Statistics, the School of Public Health, the Medical School, and Health Informatics, our graduate program brings together a diverse skill set to solve real-world problems with big data. Our undergraduate program also collaborates with faculty from partner departments in Statistics, Industrial and Systems Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mathematics.

Undergraduate Program

There is a growing demand for talented data scientists who can harvest, process, and analyze data to extract insights. Students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Data Science will build a strong foundation in math and science, enabling them to enter this up-and-coming field with confidence.

Master’s Program

The Master’s of Science in Data Science program is designed to teach students state-of-the-art methods for working with big data, and to expose them to cutting-edge methods and theory for forming the basis for next-generation big data technology. Master's program students can tailor their coursework to their personal interests and goals, in areas such as data mining, machine learning, artificial intelligence, optimization, probability, and database systems.

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate

The Data Science Post-Baccalaureate Certificate program is designed for individuals currently working in industry who want to build foundational skills in data science. This short, four-course program allows students to complete courses part-time while balancing work responsibilities. Coursework focuses on statistics, algorithmics, and infrastructure and large-scale computing.

To apply for the MS in Data Science & Post-Baccalaureate Certificate, a bachelor's degree is required, though not in data science. Foundational courses in computer programming languages, probability, and calculus are necessary to succeed in the program.
