Safety Resources with Federal Enforcement in Minnesota
The University is committed to maintaining a safe, inclusive, and productive environment for all members of our community. We are committed to protecting the privacy and legal rights of our students, faculty, and staff under the law.
The University has prepared and will continue to update guidance for University community members regarding ongoing federal actions in Minnesota. Here are a few key points from the CS&E safety protocol to help keep our community safe:
Do not open the door of a building for anyone you do not know personally, and do not allow anyone to “tailgate” into the building. Please close doors firmly behind you.
If you are approached by a federal agent, please contact the CS&E spokespeople and Office of General Counsel:
Department Head, Loren Terveen ([email protected])
Chief of Staff, Heather Eastlund ([email protected])
Office of General Counsel (612-624-4100)
Inform the agents: "I am not refusing to comply, but I am required to consult with our legal counsel before proceeding. I am not authorized to respond on behalf of the University."
Protect student/employee privacy (required by FERPA and HIPPA) and do not volunteer any information.
Document any encounter and send it to the designated CS&E contacts.
Reminders of your general rights:
You have the right to remain silent.
You have the right to legal representation.
You have the right to ask: “Am I being detained?” OR “Am I free to go?”
You have the right to refuse to consent to a search unless a valid judicial warrant is provided. Refusing to consent to a search is not a refusal to comply.
