Applications are currently being accepted for multiple tenure-track positions at the assistant professor level within the Department of Computer Science & Engineering. The focus of the search is outstanding candidates with research and teaching interests in machine learning and its applications. Nevertheless, exceptional candidates with expertise in any area of computer science & engineering will also be considered. Please note that in-person interviews are suspended indefinitely and will be replaced by interviews in a virtual format.

Continue our tradition of academic excellence
We have granted over 10,600 undergraduate and graduate degrees in the last half century, and we currently have 460 graduate and 1,600 undergraduate students in the department. The number of undergraduates in our programs continues to skyrocket, with enrollment doubling since 2014. To meet this demand, we currently have nearly 60 tenured, tenure-track, and teaching faculty to teach and inspire these students.
We continue to evolve our course offerings and degree programs to meet the needs of students and industry. In addition to core computer science degrees, we offer a M.S. in Software Engineering specifically designed for working professionals. As of fall 2020, we are offering two new degree programs. For undergraduates, we have worked with Statistics and several other departments to create a B.S. in Data Science. This comes on the heels of the successful M.S. in Data Science that launched in 2015. At the graduate level, the College will now offer an M.S. in Robotics through the newly-established Minnesota Robotics Institute (MnRI).
The department is also dedicated to broadening participation in computing. In 2020, we were awarded funding from Northeastern University’s Center for Inclusive Computing to help recruit and retain more women in our computer science programs and boost the representation of women in the field as a whole.
Conduct cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research
Research is at the heart of the department. Our faculty have advanced the field of computer science through their pioneering research in recommender systems and collaborative filtering, graph partitioning, spatial computing, micro-robotics systems, and more. We have faculty conducting research in almost every area of computing, with our main research areas being:

Our faculty are strongly collaborative, working with each other and conducting extensive amounts of interdisciplinary research with faculty from the College of Science and Engineering and the entire University community. Professors are currently conducting research with colleagues from areas including mechanical engineering, psychology, forestry, architecture, American Indian studies, public health, and with several departments in the University’s Medical School.
We have collaborative research spaces and cutting-edge lab equipment to create an environment that encourages new discoveries and the development of new technology. The University also has dedicated resources to support entrepreneurship and business development, such as the Office of Technology Commercialization and the Venture Center, that provide a pathway for our discoveries to reach the market. The department has a long history of innovations leading to successful startups, including Nfluence Analytics, Farm Vision, Corebiome Inc., Ninja Metrics, Recon Robotics, and Net Perceptions.
CS&E faculty have access to many outstanding affiliate research and outreach facilities including the Minnesota Supercomputing Institute, the Digital Technology Center, the Informatics Institute, the Laboratory for Computational Science and Engineering, the Center for Transportation Studies, the Charles Babbage Institute for Computing, Information & Culture, and the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications.
Strong support and mentoring for assistant professors
The entire department is engaged in the success and professional development for our junior faculty. Our outstanding assistant professors are the future of the department, and supporting them is the most important thing we can do for our department’s future success.
New faculty members are provided generous startup packages (this typically means support for summer salary and two research assistant support for two years, equipment for a suitable laboratory, and travel) as well as a reduced teaching load (only one course the first year, one course per semester until tenure, and one additional course release in one of their last three years before tenure), significantly reduced service load, and suitable office and laboratory space.
In addition, our department has an outstanding structure for mentoring and continual evaluation of our young faculty. Each new faculty member is paired with a three-member mentoring committee whose mission is to support, mentor, and guide the new assistant professor. Each assistant professor also receives a thorough annual review from our Non-Tenured Faculty Evaluation Committee, whose mission is to provide constructive critical feedback akin to a tenure evaluation. Finally, the Department Head meets individually and informally with each of our assistant professors multiple times every year to gauge the atmosphere, their progress, and answer questions about anything on their mind. This mentoring and evaluation system ensures that there are absolutely no surprises come tenure time—our assistant professors know what is expected of them and where they stand in the process, and we provide the guidance and support to enable them to succeed.
