One of the most prestigious public research universities in the United States, the University of Minnesota Twin Cities is one of only five universities in the nation that has an engineering school, a law school, a medical school, a veterinary medical school, and an agricultural school within one campus. The University is ranked among the top ten public research institutions in the United States, and this reputation extends to individual colleges in the University. The College of Science and Engineering (CSE) which houses the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) is ranked in the top 20 among public universities for its graduate programs.

Graduate students in ECE have access to state of the art teaching labs and cutting edge research facilities such as the Minnesota Nano Center, the Medical Devices Center, the Characterization Facility (CharFac), Institute for Mathematics and its Applications, and others. Our master's program (MSECE) trains students in areas of rapid innovation and expansion such as chip related development and design that powers the AI revolution. We have an exceptionally robust and cutting edge presence in the areas of VLSI, microelectronics, and nanoelectronics. Our faculty teach courses and conduct research focusing on VLSI Computer-Aided Design (CAD), digital VLSI design, quantum-inspired computing, design of energy-efficient, robust, and intelligent integrated circuits, cryogenic computing, nanomaterials and nanoscience applications in sensors and other devices that have significant positive impact on society.

Regardless of the area you choose, you will find that the topics that our faculty teach and research span the spectrum from the applied to the theoretical.  We also encourage interdsiciplinary research in our PhD program, and the presence of the medical school, the veterinary medical school and others will help drive your quest for novel solutions to the challenges that we face as a society. Regardless of the program you choose, our faculty will help you foster strong connections and collaborations with experts in other departments and centers at the University, as well as institutions across the country and the world.

We have students from across the world, who bring along their curiosity, eagerness to learn, and readiness to explore new areas and extend current boundaries. Come join us. We look forward to seeing you here.
