Incomplete, inaccurate, or siloed medical device inventories.

In most healthcare delivery organizations, the medical device inventory is outdated or fragmented, often housed across disparate inventory systems such as Configuration Management Database (CMDB) and Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). Appropriate team members do not have relevant attributes used to make informed business decisions and inventory systems are not dynamically updated. This creates a blind spot and creates barriers to prioritize risk remediation, responding to cyber threats, and evolve a security program.

Inventory Gaps

Most healthcare delivery organizations have outdated, fragmented, or siloed medical devices inventories:

  • Data is spread across multiple systems (CMDB, CMMS)
  • Key attributes like firmware version, OS type, and communication behavior
  • Inventories are not dynamically blind to risks

Industry Risk

Healthcare is the most targeted industry for cyberattacks — with the highest data breach cost. This makes it difficult to prioritize risk remediation, respond to cyber threats, or evolve a security program effectively.

The NIST Cybersecurity Framework positions asset management within the Identify Function, which underpins effective cybersecurity risk management across all other functions. In Healthcare, accrediting bodies such as The Joint Commission and DNV increasingly emphasize cybersecurity preparedness through risk management, device lifecycle controls, and accurate asset inventory practices – making asset visibility both a security and compliance priority.
