A buried waterfall on a backwards Mississippi River

Today the Mississippi River flows gently from its headwaters in Minnesota toward the Gulf of Mexico, but this was not always the case. New research, published in Science Advances, documents how continental glaciers and movements of the Earth's surface worked in tandem to reshape the upper Midwest and create the modern Mississippi River and its valley.

Rochelle Widmer defends Masters Thesis

Masters candidate Rochelle Widmer successfully defended her Masters degree in Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering on June 24th, 2019. She is advised by Kimberly Hill of the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory and Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering at the University of Minnesota. Rochelle is an active member of the SAFL Student Council, participated in educational outreach events at local schools, and was the 2019 Nels Nelson Memorial Fellowship recipient.

Mirko Musa defends PhD dissertation - 'Local and Non-local Geomorphic Effects of Hydrokinetic Turbines: Bridging Renewable Energy and River Morphodynamics"

Ph.D candidate Mirko Musa successfully defended his Ph.D in Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering on May 17th, 2019. He is advised by Michele Guala of the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory and Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering at the University of Minnesota. In his five years as a PhD student at the SAFL, Mirko has been a valued and engaged community member of the SAFL Student Council and in 2017 was the recipient of the Heinz G. Stefan Fellowship.

Rochelle Widmer awarded 2019 Nels Nelson Memorial Fellowship

Rochelle Widmer, Masters Candidate in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering and student at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, was awarded the 2019 Nels Nelson Memorial Fellowship during a special SAFL seminar on May 7th, 2019. The Nels Nelson Memorial Fellowship is awarded annually to a University of Minnesota student pursuing her/his Master’s degree in a water resources-related discipline at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory. Special consideration is given to students involved in hydraulics, hydrology, sediment transport, water quality or surface water management.

New stormwater seminar series launches at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory

The St. Anthony Falls Laboratory (SAFL), in partnership with the University of Minnesota’s Water Resources Center, has launched a new seminar series designed to bring national experts on stormwater management and green infrastructure to Minnesota. Called the Minnesota Stormwater Seminar Series, the monthly program aims to connect researchers and practitioners from across Minnesota to promote dialogue and discussion around a variety of stormwater and green infrastructure topics.

PhD student Jackie Taylor receives 2019 Heinz G. Stefan Fellowship

Jackie Taylor, PhD Candidate in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo-Engineering (CEGE) and student at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, was awarded the Heinz G. Stefan Fellowship during a special SAFL seminar on April 9th, 2019. The Heinz G. Stefan Fellowship is given to a University of Minnesota student pursuing graduate studies in water resources engineering who is studying at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory.  Special consideration is given to students involved in environmental hydraulics.
