New study emphasizes the significant role wetlands play in removing nitrate pollution

A newly-published Nature Geosciences article examines the role wetland networks or 'complexes' play in reducing riverine nitrate pollution at the watershed scale. The study includes the work of SAFL research associate Amy Hansen, SAFL faculty and Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior professor Jacques Finlay, and and SAFL faculty and Professor Emeritus Efi Foufoula-Georgiou. Vinicius Taguchi receives 2018 Nels Nelson Fellowship

Vinicius Taguchi, Masters Candidate in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering and student at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, was awarded the 2018 Nels Nelson Memorial Fellowship during a special SAFL seminar on March 20th, 2018. The Nels Nelson Memorial Fellowship is awarded annually to a University of Minnesota student pursuing her/his Master’s degree in a water resources-related discipline at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory. Special consideration is given to students involved in hydraulics, hydrology, sediment transport, water quality or surface water management.
Gerard Salter awarded 2018 Alvin Anderson award

This past Tuesday, February 20th, SAFL was pleased to award the 2017-2018 Alvin G. Anderson award to Gerald Salter, PhD Candidate in Earth Sciences at the University of Minnesota. The Alvin G. Anderson Award is awarded annually to University of Minnesota students pursuing graduate studies in water resources. Special consideration is given to students involved in the sediment transportation field, which was Dr. Anderson's specialty when a professor at the University of Minnesota from 1950 until 1975.

Mapping river evolution in SAFL’s Main Channel

A recent experiment in our largest flume, known as the Main Channel, is documenting how rivers shift across the landscape. SAFL postdoctoral researcher Ajay Limaye, working with the Paola research group, is taking advantage of the 2.7-m width of the Main Channel for the experiment.
