Karl Smith Named to ASEE Hall of Fame

Former TLI instructor Dr. Karl Smith has been named to the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Hall of Fame for 2023. Founded in 1893, ASEE is dedicated to promoting excellence in the teaching of engineering. 

Karl is Emeritus Professor of Civil, Environmental, and Geo-Engineering, Morse-Alumni Distinguished University Teaching Professor and Faculty Member at TLI. He taught Project and Knowledge Management in the MOT program from 1993 to 2019. He joined the University of Minnesota in 1972, and started his academic career as a materials processing engineering researcher. 

He has published numerous articles on engineering education, cooperative learning and structured controversy, problem formulation and modeling, and project management and teamwork. He has written eight books including Cooperative Learning: Increasing College Faculty instructional Productivity (with David and Roger Johnson), and Active Learning: Cooperation in the College Classroom (with David and Roger Johnson) and Teamwork and Project Management.

He received his B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from Michigan Technological University in 1969 and his MS. in the same subject from the same institution in 1972. In 1980 he received his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Minnesota.
