TLI's Travis Thul Honored by American National Standards Institute

TLI’s Director of Operations and Senior Fellow, Dr. Travis Thul, was recognized this month at World Standards Week in Washington, DC.

During the annual Leadership & Service Awards portion of the event, Travis was presented with the American National Standards Institute’s (ANSI) Next Generation Award. This award is presented "in recognition of vision, leadership, dedication, and contributions performed early in one’s career as a member of the standardization and conformity assessment community".

Travis was recognized as the chairman of a working group developing an industry standard, indexed as IEEE/ANSI C63.30-2021, “American National Standard For Methods Of Measurements Of Radio-Frequency Emissions From Wireless Power Transfer Equipment.” This standard, approved by ANSI and published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2021, was the culmination years of work and represented by dozens of engineers representing organizations such as the FCC, Apple, Ford, UL, and Toyota.

As Chairman of this working group, Travis helped lead a process requiring hundreds of tests, thousands of calculations, and untold debate of the nuances in measuring the reactive near-field of the electromagnetic spectrum. The final document represents the most ambitious electromagnetic compliance standard of its type in nearly 40 years and is poised to impact technologies ranging from electric vehicles to pacemakers.

“This award recognizes the untold hours of work done by nearly 50 engineers over the majority of a decade," Travis said. "I am proud of the efforts of the entire team and am honored to have worked with some of the finest engineers from across the globe.”

Travis was nominated by American National Standards Committee C63 Chairman, Dan Hoolihan. Dan, of Lindstrom, MN, and Travis, can be seen together in the accompanying photo.
