Core Sampling

Samples are extracted from cores for discrete analyses, using tools appropriate for the lithologies.

  • Soft sediments, peat, freeze cores: Spatulas, scoops, knives, microtome, and specialized devices for volumetric subsampling
  • Rock, dry sediments, and other lithified cores: Rock saw, scroll saw, bandsaw, hammer and chisel, drill press with water swivel and mini-coring bit

Volumetric samples from soft sediment lithologies can be used to determine water content, bulk density, and mass accumulation rates.

Samples from cores stored at the CSD Facility can be extracted by Facility technicians, or researchers may visit and perform the sampling.
