Lake Shore 8600 Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM)
One of three currently functioning VSM systems at the IRM. Please also see our MicroMag VSM and MPMS-3 pages.
Specifications:
- Temperature range: 100 K -- 1273 K
- Single Stage Variable Temperature (SSVT) adapter (100 K -- 950 K). Liquid Nitrogen used for low-temperature measurements (stable from > 100 K). Argon and nitrogen gases are used during heating and cooling between room-temperature and 950 K. Preferred for measurements when continually varying temperature, e.g., Ms-T curves.
- High temperature oven (303 K -- 1273 K). Measurements are made in argon gas. Preferred when holding a specific temperature steps, e.g., high-T hysteresis loops or FORC diagrams.
- More details on the SSVT and Oven can be found on the Lake Shore Cryotronics website.
- Field range: 0 T -- 2.5 T (maximum field variable with pole gap)
- For in-field measurements (hysteresis and FORCs) the maximum applied field is 1.8 T.
- For remanence curves (IRM and backfield curves) a maximum saturation magnetization of 2.5 T can be applied.
- Sensitivity: 10E-9 Am2
- Can accommodate rock chips, capsules in straws and thin film holders.
- Multiple holders available.
- Field gap can be adjusted.
Measurement Types:
Typically used for:
- Hysteresis loops.
- Backfield remanence curves.
- Isothermal Remanent Magnetization (IRM) acquisition curves.
- First Order Reversal Curves (FORC).
A more detailed description can be found in IRM Quarterly Vol. 33, No. 4 and on the Lake Shore Cryotronics website.
