CEMS researchers combine generative AI and polymer field theory to discover new block polymer phases

Nov. 7, 2023 - In a recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the Dorfman Group from CEMS introduced an innovative computational method for uncovering new block polymer phases. By integrating generative adversarial networks (GANs) with polymer self-consistent field theory (SCFT), the team successfully discovered hundreds of new block polymer candidate phases.
Samuel Swartzendruber wins outstanding research award at NC State Frontiers of MSE Undergraduate Symposium

Oct. 18, 2023 - CEMS undergraduate student Samuel Swartzendruber (MSE '25) was selected to attend the 2023 NC State Frontiers of MSE Undergraduate Symposium and won an award for outstanding undergraduate research for "Polymorphism in Diblock Copolymer Blends."
Research discovery shows electron beam radiation can repair nanostructures

In a surprising new study, researchers at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities have found that the electron beam radiation that they previously thought degraded crystals can actually repair cracks in these nanostructures.

CEMS researchers lead $5M federal grant to design electrocatalysts

Oct. 4, 2023 - A team led by University of Minnesota Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science researchers has received $5 million over three years from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to establish a new Science Foundations for the Energy Earthshots team, entitled “Molecular and Atomic EngineeRing of Interfacial Electro-catalytic Environments (MARIE)”.
CEMS graduate student Sreejith Nair wins NAMBE Outstanding Student Talk Award

Sept. 22, 2023 - Sreejith Nair, a fourth-year chemical engineering graduate student in Professor Bharat Jalan's research group, recently won an Outstanding Student Talk Award at the 37th North American Conference on Molecular Beam Epitaxy (NAMBE) 2023.
The conference is a prominent international forum for reporting scientific and technological developments in Molecular Beam Epitaxy research.
Carba, co-founded by Paul Dauenhauer & Andrew Jones, wins 2023 MN Cup Grand Prize

Sept. 19, 2023 - A Minnesota-based startup company, Carba, co-founded by Dr. Andrew Jones (ChE, Chem '09) and CEMS Professor Paul Dauenhauer, was recently awarded the $50,000 Grand Prize at the 2023 MN Cup. The MN Cup is a statewide startup competition that allows entrepreneurs to creatively address a wide range of societal challenges - including mobility, environment, public safety, education, health care and robotics.
