BME students and postdoc receive high honors at 2023 SB3C

June 21, 2023 — Department of Biomedical Engineering community members received multiple honors – including a first place, two second place, and three finalist positions – in the student paper competition during the 2023 Summer Biomechanics, Bioengineering, and Biotransport Conference (SB3C).

The following individuals are part of BME faculty labs and were recognized during the event:

Dillon Williams (Biomedical Engineering PhD student)
1st place, Cardiovascular Mechanics and Remodeling
Advisor: David Wood

Shannon Flanary (Chemical Engineering PhD student)
2nd place, Cardiovascular Mechanics and Remodeling
Advisor: Victor Barocas

Kara Peak (Biomedical Engineering postdoc)
2nd place, Morphogenesis, Maternal Health, and Abdominal Health (thesis work done at University of Texas at Dallas)
Advisor: Victor Barocas

Emily Hoffmann (Biomedical Engineering PhD student)
Finalist, Morphogenesis, Maternal Health, and Abdominal Health
Advisor: Kyoko Yoshida

Zonghu Han (Mechanical Engineering PhD student)
Finalist, Multiscale Biomechanics and Fluid Dynamics/Transport
Advisor: John Bischof

The SB3C Conference received approximately 200 student entries this year in the PhD competition, with the top six finalists for each category being invited to speak in a podium session during the conference. Anonymous judges then evaluate each finalist based both on their original paper and their presentation.

The conference also hosts a similar competition for MS and BS students. A University of Minnesota student received honors in the undergraduate competition:

Gracine Sime (Biomedical Engineering BS student)
Finalist

Congratulations to all our winners and finalists!
