How to apply
Prerequisites and admission criteria
Only current students in the Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Program at the University of Minnesota are eligible to apply. Students from other programs or universities should view instructions on how to apply for our MS and PhD programs.
Students apply after the spring semester of their third year. At this time, you must have completed all sophomore- and junior-level BMEn coursework (BMEn 2101, 2401, 2501, 3011, 3015, 3111, 3115, 3211, 3215, 3311, 3315, 3411, 3415). Students who haven’t completed these 13 courses or their approved equivalents aren’t eligible to apply.
Admission will be based solely on the BMEn GPA (that is, the GPA of the 13 required BMEn courses listed above). Applicants with a BMEn GPA of 3.6 or higher are guaranteed admission. Applicants with a lower GPA will be considered on a space-available basis.

Notes about the application
- Signatures are not required on the Integrated Degree Engineering and Science Electives (ESE) Planning Worksheet for the purposes of applying to the program. Students will only be required to procure approval signatures on the worksheet if/when they’re notified of their admission to the program.
- Other materials (e.g., letters of recommendation, GRE scores, transcripts, etc.) are not required and won’t be considered.
The deadline to submit the application form is June 1 after the end of the junior year. All grades should be posted by that time and must be included on the application form. Late applications won’t be accepted. If June 1 falls on a weekend or University holiday, the applications will be due on the following business day.
Applicants will be notified of their admission status by July 1.
Departmental support isn’t offered to students in the Integrated Degree Program. Students are encouraged to seek external financial aid, such as scholarships and loans.
