Requirements - Cardiovascular engineering training program

Our cardiovascular engineering training program supports trainees their first two years in residence.

Trainee requirements

  • Complete three three-week lab rotations before selecting a PhD advisor.

  • Develop an individualized development plan.

  • Complete required PhD in Biomedical Engineering coursework, including Advanced Cardiac Physiology and Anatomy (PHSL 5510, 3 credits), Cardiovascular Devices (BMEn 5601, 1 credit), and Professional Skills and Ethics for Biomedical Engineers (BMEn 8611, 2 credits). 

  • Initiate a PhD thesis related to cardiovascular engineering.

  • Complete a cardiovascular clinical and preclinical/device immersion.

  • Attend a medical device innovation bootcamp.

  • Attend monthly lunches with cardiovascular device-oriented clinicians.

  • Attend monthly professional development lunches.

  • Participate in an annual U of M research symposium.

  • Attend a national meeting related to cardiovascular engineering.

  • Participate in responsible conduct of research training.

  • Complete an exit interview with the steering committee.
