January 20, 2021—A team of BME faculty and students were recognized with a Best Manuscript Award from Circulation Research, a publication of the American Heart Association. The annual award honors outstanding articles published in the journal.

The article appeared on the publication’s July 2020 cover and featured a groundbreaking study in which University of Minnesota researchers 3D printed a working heart pump with real human cells.

Circulation Research noted the article met high standards of scientific excellence, has been widely read online, and represents some of the journal’s best work in 2020.

Researchers from the UMN Department of Biomedical Engineering included Department Head Brenda Ogle (lead researcher), Professor Alena G. Tolkacheva, PhD alum Molly Kupfer, PhD students Wei-Han Lin and Ryan R. Mahutga, and undergraduate student Jeffrey Ai. The team also included collaborators from across the University and at the University of Alabama Department of Biomedical Engineering.
