Student groups host engaging events

November 17, 2025 — Student groups in the Department of Biomedical Engineering have been actively organizing a variety of events over the past several months. Events have offered students valuable opportunities for education, networking, and professional development.

Documentary screening and expert panel on women's health

The Graduate Women in Biomedical Engineering (GWBME) student group collaborated with Grad-She-Is-ME from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the graduate student community of the Society of Women Engineers (GradSWE) to host a screening of the award-winning documentary, "Below the Belt," which offers a powerful look into the challenges patients face while navigating women’s health issues, particularly endometriosis.

Following the film, the event featured an expert Q&A panel with researchers and physicians working in the field of women's health: Dr. Shruthi Chandra, Dr. Danielle Schirm, and Assistant Professor Kyoko Yoshida.

Two-part event with Boston Scientific

Graduate Women in Biomedical Engineering organized a comprehensive two-part event focused on industry insights and networking in partnership with Boston Scientific.

First was an interactive Q&A session with Boston Scientific employees and Biomedical Engineering alumni Tina Lenneman, PhD (Victor Barocas’ Lab) and Heather Bomberger, PhD (Dave Wood’s Lab). They covered a range of topics, from how to present effectively to mixed academic-industry audiences to insights on transitioning into industry after graduate school.

The group also organized an industry tour of Boston Scientific, featuring guided tours of Boston Scientific facilities, student presentations, and networking opportunities with industry professionals.

Graduate students offer advice in panel for undergrads

The Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) and Graduate Women in Biomedical Engineering student groups co-hosted a panel designed to provide guidance to undergraduate students. During the session, graduate student panelists shared their academic and professional experiences with the undergraduate students in attendance, sharing knowledge, advice, and insights into what it's like to work in industry or pursue a Master's or PhD.
