NSF ATP-Bio awarded interdisciplinary team medal in bioengineering

January 28, 2025NSF ATP-Bio recently received the Edward Grood Interdisciplinary Team Science Medal in Bioengineering from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

This honor recognizes NSF ATP-Bio’s groundbreaking work in biopreservation technologies, extending the ability to bank and transport cells, tissues, organs, organisms, and more. The medal is awarded each year to a team of scientists and engineers who have carried out impactful interdisciplinary research in the bioengineering field.

Selected teams receive $1,500, a vermeil medal, a certificate, and a $750 travel allowance for the team leader to attend the award presentation.

John Bischof, PhD, is NSF ATP-Bio’s Director. There are 14 other University of Minnesota faculty members on the NSF ATP-Bio team representing the Medical School, the College of Science and Engineering, the College of Education and Human Development, and the Law School.

Bischof is a Distinguished McKnight University Professor and a faculty member in the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. He serves as Director of the University of Minnesota Institute for Engineering in Medicine and currently holds the Medtronic-Bakken Endowed Chair for Engineering in Medicine.

NSF ATP-Bio is co-led by the University of Minnesota and Massachusetts General Hospital. Texas A&M University, University of California Riverside, and University of California Berkeley are core collaborating institutions. Carnegie Mellon University is an affiliated partner institution.
