Undergraduate Scholarships, Awards, and Support Funds

Scholarships

Funded by many generous alumni and friends, these scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit to students studying civil engineering, environmental engineering, or geoengineering.

3M/Coleman Family Foundation Scholarship

Created by CEGE alumnus Dick Coleman and his wife Faith Coleman to be awarded to undergraduate freshman or transfer students studying civil engineering. 

Al Johnson Construction Company Scholarship

To be awarded to undergraduates studying civil engineering who exhibit outstanding scholarship, leadership, boundless curiosity, and untiring work ethic and are in need of financial assistance.

Andrew Drescher Scholarship

Established to honor Andrew Drescher, an internationally renowned researcher in the area of geoengineering, to be awarded to undergraduate civil and geo- engineering students with an interest in geotechnical engineering.

Archie & Marie Carter/American Society of Civil Engineering Scholarship

To be awarded to juniors and seniors studying civil engineering.

Beavers Heavy Engineering Construction Scholarship

Created by Douglas A. Johnson and the trustees of The Beavers Charitable Trust to support incoming undergraduate students who are studying civil engineering, show interest in heavy construction and/or infrastructure, and who demonstrate financial need. 

Bonestroo, Rosene, Anderlik & Associates Undergraduate Scholarship

CEGE alumni Otto Bonestroo and Robert Rosene established this scholarship to be awarded to undergraduates studying civil engineering.

CEGE Graduating Class Scholarship

Initially launched by the CEGE graduating class of 2018 and sustained by subsequent graduating classes, to be awarded to undergraduates who have just declared a CEGE major. 

Chieh and I-Fei Ouyang Scholarship in Civil Engineering

Established by CSE alumni Chieh and I-Fei Ouyang, to be awarded to undergraduates studying civil engineering who demonstrate academic merit. 

Clifton T. Barker Scholarship

To be awarded to a sophomore or junior studying civil engineering who has a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Dakota Aggregates Scholarship

To be awarded to undergraduates studying civil engineering, geology, land-use planning or related disciplines. 

Dennis R. and Catherine M. Martenson Scholarship

Established by CEGE alumnus and instructor Dennis Martenson and his wife Catherine to be awarded to graduate or undergraduate students who are studying environmental or civil engineering. 

Donald and Louise Ruhnke Scholarship

To be awarded to undergraduates studying geoengineering.

Doug Barr Student Research Scholarship

Established to honor CEGE alumnus Doug Barr by Barr Engineering, colleagues, and friends on the occasion of Barr Engineering’s 50th anniversary. To be awarded to CEGE students who demonstrate academic merit and who are participating in approved research-related activities. 

E.P. Pfleider Memorial Scholarship

To be awarded to a sophomore majoring in geoengineering who demonstrates dedication, effort, and financial need.

Eugene Skok Scholarship

Created to honor the legacy of Eugene Skok, to be awarded to upper division undergraduates or transfer students studying civil engineering with an interest in pavement/materials. 

Gerald W. Everson/Ames Construction Scholarship

Founded in memory of Gerald “Jerry” Everson by friends, family and colleagues at Ames Construction. To be awarded to undergraduates studying civil engineering. Preference for students from Ortonville or Lakeville, MN. 

Grace E. Rahilly and Harold J. Rahilly Mine and Metallurgy Scholarship

To be awarded to undergraduates studying civil or geo- engineering.

Guy N. Bjorge Scholarship

To be awarded to a CEGE junior or senior with a GPA of 2.6 or higher.

Jack and Sue Cornwell Memorial Scholarship

To be awarded to civil engineering majors who demonstrate financial need and/or high academic achievement.

James and Sharon Weinel/Chi Epsilon Scholarship

To be awarded to senior CEGE undergraduate members of Chi Epsilon, a civil engineering honor society which recognizes students with high academic ability.  

James C. Olson Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship

To be awarded to students studying civil engineering who demonstrate academic achievement and dedication and have financial need. 

James Grant Waits Scholarship

Established by Florence Hanson Waits to honor James Grant Waits, this scholarship is to be awarded to a CEGE undergraduate. 

John Elwood Holmberg Memorial Scholarship

Established by Cynthia and Elwood Holmberg in memory of their son John, to be awarded to CEGE undergraduates with financial need, with a preference for part-time students working their way through school. 

John J. Connors Scholarship

Established by Daniel Connors in memory of his father John J. Connors, to be awarded to CEGE undergraduates who are actively engaged in the college community through activities such as student organizations, professional engineering organizations, being a student ambassador, outreach to prospective students, or the community.

John G. Williams Memorial Scholarship

To be awarded to undergraduate students studying geoengineering.

Longyear Memorial Scholarship

To be awarded to undergraduate students studying civil engineering with a preference for those who have financial need.

Lucian G. and Genevieve K. Vorpahl Memorial Scholarship

Established by CEGE alumnus Lucian Vorpahl in memory of his wife Genevieve, to be awarded to freshmen or transfer undergraduate students with academic promise. Preference will be given to students interested in civil engineering. 

Mike Costello Memorial Scholarship

Established to honor the memory of environmental expert Mike Costello by Barr Engineering, colleagues and friends. To be awarded to undergraduates studying geoengineering who demonstrate academic merit and financial need. 

Miles Kersten Memorial Scholarship

Founded in honor of late Professor Emeritus Miles Kersten, to be awarded to undergraduates interested in pursuing civil engineering and who demonstrate academic promise. Preference is given to new transfer students. 

Minnesota Geotechnical Society (MGS) Scholarship

Established by MGS to be awarded to junior or senior students studying geoengineering who have a GPA of 3.25 or higher or to graduate students with good academic standing and exceptional potential in their field of study. 

Minnesota Surveyors and Engineers Society (MSES) Scholarship

To be awarded to Minnesota residents who are junior or senior students studying civil engineering and possessing a career interest in transportation. 

Nystrom Family Scholarship

Established by CEGE alumnus James Nystrom and Gail Nystrom, to be awarded to undergraduates studying civil, environmental, or geo- engineering. Preference to be given to students who graduated from high schools in greater Minnesota. 

R. Lucian and Maye Vorpahl Memorial Scholarship

Founded by CEGE alumnus Lucian Vorpahl in memory of his parents, Lucian and Maye Vorpahl. To be awarded to freshmen or transfer undergraduate students with academic promise who are interested in civil engineering. 

Robert M. Dexter Memorial Scholarship

Established to honor the memory of CEGE faculty member Robert Dexter. To be awarded to upper division or transfer students who are studying civil engineering with an emphasis on structural engineering. 

Sommerfeld Undergraduate Scholarship

To be awarded to undergraduates studying civil, environmental, or geo- engineering.

Theodore V. Galambos Scholarship

Ted and Barbara Galambos, with their friends and colleagues, created this scholarship to honor Emeritus Professor Galambos’ many contributions to teaching and structural engineering research. To be awarded to undergraduates studying civil engineering.

Westwood Professional Services Scholarship

To be awarded to freshmen and transfer undergraduate students interested in studying civil engineering. Preference given to students with financial need.

Undergraduate Support Funds

Chester D. Okerlund Award

This award honoring the memory of Chester D. Okerlund is given annually to the CEGE student who graduated with the highest GPA during the preceding year.

Simon and Claire Benson Award

Established in memory of former CEGE students Simon and Claire Benson, this award recognizes outstanding undergraduate performance.

Engineers Without Borders Program Support Fund

To be used for the activities of the student chapter of Engineers Without Borders-USA University of Minnesota.

Ruth V. Jones Fund for Global Student Engagement

To support University of Minnesota College of Science and Engineering programs that engage students in creating a better world through engineering projects that help communities around the globe improve access to clean water through University-approved student organizations. A long-time supporter of the student chapter of Engineers Without Borders-USA UMN, founder Ruth V. Jones’ preference is for this fund to primarily support EWB-USA UMN.
