Scholarships
We have several scholarships and prizes available for our chemistry majors. Awards are announced in the spring and awarded the following fall to your university account.
Application
Fill out the application, be sure to state which award you are applying for, and include the following information:
- number of publications
- number of teaching assistant appointments
- number of meeting presentations
- honors or awards previously received
- specific career plans (i.e., if you plan to go on to graduate school, where, what program)
Deadline: turn in all materials to 135 Smith Hall by March 15.
You can only apply for one award in a given year, you can not receive the same award twice, and you need to be registered full time to receive the award.

Classroom performance
- Sally Herz Memorial Scholarship for top honors in general chemistry
- Jane B. Spence Scholarship for top honors in organic chemistry
- J. Lewis Maynard Memorial Prize in Advanced Inorganic Chemistry for outstanding scholastic achievement in advanced inorganic chemistry
Awards given to sophomores
- Thomas DuBruil Memorial Award for outstanding achievement in chemistry research
Awards given to juniors
- M. Cannon Sneed Memorial Fund & the Andrews Fund for outstanding achievement in chemistry research
- Robert C. Brasted Memorial Fellowship + part-time apprenticeship in the department's general chemistry program, given to an outstanding chemistry major who has expressed an interest in a chemistry teaching career
- Lloyd W. Goerke Scholarship & the Andrews Fund for outstanding academic achievement
- Peteris Auzins Memorial Scholarship for outstanding academic achievement
Awards given to seniors
- David A. and Merece H. Johnson Scholarship for outstanding academic achievement
- Wayland E. Noland Award for Academic Excellence in Chemistry for outstanding academic achievement
- Dr. Paul F. and Patricia Guehler Chemistry Scholarship for outstanding academic achievement
Scholarships
- Betty A. Lewis Scholarship for outstanding scholastic achievement
- Hach Chemistry Teaching Scholarship, given to chemistry majors who are committed to becoming chemistry teachers
Criteria
Seniors
Financial award: $3,000-$5,000
Eligibility: must have one year left in the chemistry program
Material needed: letter of recommendation from research adviser, brief description of undergraduate research, statement of career goals
Juniors
Financial award: $2,000-$3,000
Eligibility: must have two years left in the chemistry program
Material needed: letter of recommendation from chemistry faculty member, statement of career goals
Sophomores
Financial award: $1,000-$2,000
Eligibility: must have three years left in the chemistry program and have done undergraduate research
Material needed: letter of recommendation from chemistry faculty member, statement of career goals
