Scholarships support students in multiple ways
Addelyn Fosland and Colin Barnicle were chosen as the 2026 recipients of the Robert Dexter Memorial Scholarship. Robert Dexter was a professor of structural engineering in CEGE. This scholarship was established to honor his memory. It is awarded annually to students studying structural engineering.
Scholarships are beneficial for students. And the benefits can go beyond financial support.
Addelyn Fosland, a junior, is very grateful for the money that alleviates her financial stress. That peace of mind is very important to her. She is also grateful that the money frees her from working quite as much and allows her to pursue expanded involvement in the UMN community. She participates in the campus student chapters of American Society of Civil Engineers and the Society of Women Engineers. She also enjoys Gopher Football. For Addelyn, those social connections are very important. They are not only fun, but also help her to recharge and find energy to pursue her studies.
Colin Barnicle plans to graduate in May of 2027, and is considering continuing his education in the area of seismic engineering. He noted that the Robert Dexter Memorial Scholarship will help him graduate without debt, and it sets him up with more opportunities to pursue graduate school. He was especially appreciative of the validation he felt upon receiving the scholarship, recognition for his hard work and assurance that there is a place for him in civil structural engineering.
Scholarships benefit students financially, but also in deeper, perhaps less obvious ways. If you would like to support CEGE students, you can contribute to the Robert Dexter Memorial Scholarship or other funds.
