CEGE Department Scholarships

Each year, the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering is among the College of Science and Engineering’s top awarders of undergraduate scholarships.

Scholarships are awarded on a variety of criteria, including academic achievement, participation in extra-curricular activities, being a first-generation college student, representation, or financial need. Upper-division students in any of our majors and lower-division students who have a demonstrated interest in civil engineering, environmental engineering, or geoengineering are encouraged to apply.

CEGE DEPARTMENTAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Al Johnson Construction Company Scholarship

An annual undergraduate scholarship to a civil engineering student who exhibits outstanding scholarship, leadership, boundless curiosity, and untiring work ethic who is in need of financial assistance.

Andrew Drescher Scholarship

This scholarship is named in honor of Andrew Drescher, an internationally renowned researcher and an outstanding researcher in the area of geoengineering. This gift is intended to provide a scholarship for undergraduate civil engineering and geoengineering students with an interest in geotechnical engineering.

Archie & Marie Carter/American Society of Civil Engineering Schools Scholarship

This scholarship is for juniors and seniors in civil engineering who are U.S. citizens and residents of Minnesota.

Beavers Heavy Engineering Construction Scholarship

This scholarship supports undergraduates who are studying civil engineering, show career interest in heavy construction and/or infrastructure, and demonstrate financial need. Eligible students will be new to the University of Minnesota College of Science and Engineering as either an entering first-year student or a transfer student.

Bonestroo, Rosene, Anderlik Undergraduate Scholarship

Partners in an engineering and technical firm, Otto Bonestroo, Robert Rosene, and Joseph Anderlik established this fund in 1986 to support undergraduate students in civil, environmental, or geo- engineering and to recognize individual faculty members who demonstrate their interest and commitment to undergraduate students.

CEGE Graduating Class Gift Scholarship

Created and supported by CEGE graduating students, this scholarship benefits future CEGE students who have just declared a major within CEGE. 

Chester D. Okerlund Scholarship

Phyllis Okerlund Brayley established this fund in memory of her husband, Chester D. Okerlund. The gift is awarded each spring to the civil engineering student who graduated with the highest GPA during the preceding year.

Chieh and I-Fei Ouyang Scholarship in Civil Engineering

The purpose of the Ouyang Scholarship is to support full-time undergraduates with academic merit who are seeking a degree in civil engineering. 

Clifton T. Barker Scholarship

Scholarships for sophomores or juniors in civil engineering who have above average ability with G.P.A. averages of 3.5 or better.

Craig and Janice Soderholm Ebeling Scholarship 

Established by Craig Ebeling and Janice Soderholm Ebeling to support undergraduate students in civil, environmental, or geo- engineering with a preference for those who graduated high school in Nobles County, Minnesota, and/or who are actively engaged in the college community, especially those active in the student chapter of Engineers Without Borders. The first award will be made in the academic year 2024-25. 

Dennis R. and Catherine M. Martenson Scholarship

The Martenson Scholarship is awarded to CEGE students with an interest in environmental engineering. 

Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering Scholarship

Scholarships for undergraduate students in civil engineering, environmental engineering, or geoengineering on the basis of merit.

Donald and Louise Ruhnke Scholarship

Scholarships in the mineral or geoengineering programs in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering. Recipients will be selected by the department's scholarship committee.

Doug Barr Memorial Student Research Scholarship

This scholarship was created in tribute to Barr Engineering founder Doug Barr. It provides support for CEGE undergraduates who demonstrate academic merit and who are participating in approved research-related activities.

E.P. Pfleider Memorial Scholarship

Since 1981, the Theodore W. Bennett family has thoughtfully and generously supported the Eugene P. Pfleider chair in mineral engineering and rock mechanics in recognition of the University of Minnesota as a national center of excellence in mineral engineering.

Edith (Edie) and Gary Postiglione Scholarship in Environmental Engineering

This scholarship was created by Edie and Gary Postiglione to support environmental engineering students (undergraduates or those participating in the BS/MS environmental engineering program). 

Eugene Skok Scholarship

This scholarship is named in honor of Dr. Eugene (Gene) Skok, P.E., for his contributions to the pavement community. The scholarship is funded through proceeds of the National Road Research Alliance (NRRA) conference, and it benefits undergraduate students studying at the University of Minnesota with an interest in pavement engineering.

Florence Hanson Waits Scholarship

A scholarship in the name of James Grant Waits to the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering.

Guy N. Bjorge Fund

Jack and Sue Cornwell Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to undergraduates in civil engineering who demonstrate financial need and/or high academic merit.

James and Elizabeth Craig Scholarship in Engineering

The Craig Scholarship supports CEGE undergraduates with a preference for those students studying geoengineering and for female students (if they are underrepresented in CEGE at the time of award).

James and Sharon Weinel/Chi Epsilon Scholarship

A scholarship for a senior Chi Epsilon student in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering.

James C. Olson Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship

Maren H. Olson established this scholarship in memory of her husband, James C. Olson, to pay tribute to his achievements while assisting undergraduate students in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering. It is hoped that this scholarship will provide an excellent mechanism for recognizing outstanding students with financial need in order that they become exemplary graduates of the department.

Jeff and Ann Stewart/PE Services Scholarship

Created by PE Services founders Ann Johnson Stewart and Jeff Stewart, this scholarship supports undergraduates in civil, environmental, or geo- engineering with active involvement in student organizations (such as the student chapter of Engineers Without Borders or other student organizations), volunteer work, or service learning. 

John Elwood Holmberg Memorial Scholarship

Established by Cynthia and Elwood Holmberg in memory of their son John, this scholarship is for undergraduate students with a financial need in the College of Science and Engineering’s Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering. The first preference is to go to part-time students in the department who are working their way through school. If, in any given year there is not an eligible part-time candidate, the scholarship may be offered to another part-to-full-time student in the department with the greatest need for financial support.

John J. Connors Scholarship

This award supports CEGE undergraduate students who are actively engaged in the college community (for example, involved in student or professional organizations) or other community or outreach activities.

Kenton E. Spading Scholarship

Kenton Spading established this scholarship to support full-time undergraduates in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering. Preference will be given to students from outstate Minnesota who attended a public high school or to non-traditional students.

Mike Costello Memorial Scholarship

In memory of Mike Costello, this scholarship supports full-time undergraduate students studying civil engineering, with a preference for those interested in geoengineering. 

Minnesota Geotechnical Society Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded to undergraduate CEGE students in their junior or senior year who are studying geoengineering and demonstrate academic merit with at least a 3.25 cumulative GPA. 

Nystrom Family Scholarship

James and Gail Nystrom established this scholarship to make it easier for students to pursue a college education. This scholarship supports CEGE undergraduates, particularly those who graduated from small, non-urban high schools in Minnesota.

Robert Dexter Memorial Scholarship

Named in honor of a professor who died, the scholarship supports undergraduates in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering.

Sommerfield Scholarship

Theodore V. Galambos Scholarship

Ted and Barbara Galambos, along with their friends and colleagues, established this fund to honor Ted's contributions to the University of Minnesota's Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering and its structural engineering program. It funds scholarships for undergraduate civil engineering students.

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE THROUGH PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERING ORGANIZATIONS (PARTIAL LISTING)

American Coal Ash Association (ACAA) Scholarships

The ACAA Educational Foundation intends to award two students interested in advancing the beneficial use of coal combustion products. One $5,000 award and one $2,500 award will recognize outstanding students from an accredited program in the United States. The awards will be based on essays, coursework, academic credentials, recommendations and a demonstrated interest in the utilization of coal combustion products.

American Council of Engineering Companies of Minnesota (ACEC/MN)

The American Council of Engineering Companies of Minnesota scholarships are open to students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in an engineering program approved by Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) or in an accredited land surveying program. Students must be entering their junior, senior, or fifth year in a qualifying program within the state of Minnesota and must be a citizen of the United States.

American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC)

The AISC Education Foundation sponsors scholarship programs to assist qualified students, and to encourage creativity, interest and proficiency in the fabricated structural steel construction industry.

American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG)

AIPG offers up to four $1000 scholarships to undergraduate geological sciences majors who are at least sophomores. Scholarships are to be used to for tuition and/or room and board.

American Public Works Association — Minnesota Chapter (APWA-MN)

Each year APWA-MN awards five scholarships to college students pursuing Civil Engineering or Public Works-related degrees. To qualify, students must be Minnesota residents and be entering their 3rd or 4th academic year.

ASCE Minnesota Section Structural Committee

The Structural Committee of ASCE Minnesota sponsors a special scholarship for undergraduate civil engineering students concentrating in structural engineering. The value of the scholarship is $2,000. In order to be eligible for this scholarship applicants must have evidence of interest and aptitude in structural engineering. Evidence may include coursework (for example, CEGE 3401 and higher), structural work/internship experience, or anything else that shows interest or aptitude in structural engineering. Preference given to ASCE members. Join the student section of ASCE by going by the ASCE student office, filing out and returning the ASCE Student Membership Form and paying the nominal membership fee.

American Society for Civil Engineers (ASCE)

Scholarships from the American Society for Civil Engineers are awarded annually and are reserved for undergraduate civil engineering students who are members of ASCE. 

Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO)

Senior Undergraduate Scholarships of $5,000 to $10,000 will be awarded. Successful recipients must be U.S. citizens and enrolled full-time at the senior level in an accredited civil engineering program, or in a related field as determined by ASDSO, and must demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in hydraulics, hydrology or geotechnical disciplines, or in another discipline related to the design, construction and operation of dams. ASDSO also offers scholarships for graduate students.

Bolton & Menk, Inc.

Bolton & Menk's University of Minnesota scholarships promote recruitment and retention of students within the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering. Lower and upper division students who are on track to receive a degree from CEGE are eligible for up to an $8,000 scholarship ($2,000 per year for up to four years).

City Engineers Association of Minnesota

The City Engineers Association of Minnesota (CEAM) Scholarship Program offers scholarships to students focusing in areas that are most closely aligned with city engineering such as transportation, water resources and environmental — sanitary and water systems. CEAM prefers to consider only candidates who have not received a scholarship in the past in an effort to reach more students.

International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI) Chapter Scholarship Award

Financial assistance for undergraduate-level students in the field of concrete. Funding is provided through the ICRI Minnesota Chapter. Any student who has or will complete at least two (2) years of study by the end of the summer may apply. The student must be currently attending class within the boundaries of the ICRI Minnesota Chapter or have a parent or relative as a current Chapter member.

Minnesota Concrete Council (MCC)

MCC is committed to encouraging students to pursue careers in concrete-related fields and to enhance the level of professionalism and industry engagement of our Minnesota students. MCC offers scholarships ranging in value from $1,000 to $4,000 annually for engineering and construction management students.

Minnesota County Engineers Association (MCEA)

The Minnesota County Engineers Association Scholarship Program awards two $2,000 scholarships to eligible students attending the University of Minnesota. Applicants must be a resident of Minnesota or employed by a Minnesota county or city, attend school full-time, and be a sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student at the time of scholarship award.

Minnesota Erosion Control Association (MECA)

The Charlie Parnell Memorial Scholarship was established by the Minnesota Erosion Control Association (MECA) in 2007 to recognize the outstanding work and enthusiasm Charlie Parnell contributed to the erosion and sediment control and stormwater field. MECA wishes to award this $500 scholarship to an individual who wants to pursue an engineering or science degree with an emphasis on erosion and sediment control or stormwater management.

Minnesota High Tech Association (MHTA) Foundation

MHTA offers scholarships for Minnesota undergraduate students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines. These awards include $5,000 and $10,000 awards and can include internship opportunities at MHTA member companies. Applicants must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in a STEM field or in STEM teaching; a sophomore, junior or senior. Sophomore status may include students who have achieved this status through advanced placement credit or post-secondary options.

Minnesota Sea Grant

Minnesota Sea Grant offers a number of fellowship opportunities each year for graduate and undergraduate students in areas of aquatic sciences, natural resources policy and economics, civil engineering, and GIS/landscape ecology. Most fellowships are offered each year and have application deadlines in January or February.

Minnesota Surveyors and Engineers Society (MSES)

The Minnesota Surveyors and Engineers Society provides many scholarships, up to $2000 each per year to students who will be juniors or seniors in civil engineering in the next academic year. Applicants are expected to have a career interest in any of the areas that support transportation, such as, geotechnical, structural, or environmental engineering; roadway or pavement design; water resources or hydraulics; intelligent transportation systems (ITS); transportation planning; or other related fields.

National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA)

The NCSEA Diversity in Structural Engineering Scholarship, established by the NCSEA Foundation, will award funding to students who have been traditionally underrepresented in structural engineering, including but not limited to BIPOC - Black/African American, Native/Indigenous American, and other People of Color (such as Latinx).

Northwest Branch of ASCE

The Northwest Branch of ASCE will be giving out one Goodell Scholarship in the amount of $2,000. It is offered to civil engineering students who live within the boundaries of the Northwest Wisconsin Branch. The intent of this scholarship is to recognize the unselfish contributions to the civil engineering profession that were made by Mr. Harvey Goodell and to perpetuate his spirit and enthusiasm.

Richard P. Braun Transportation Scholarship

The Richard P. Braun Transportation Scholarship honors Braun’s leadership in transportation within the Minnesota Department of Transportation and in founding the Center for Transportation Studies (CTS). Each year one scholarship is given to a University of Minnesota undergraduate who is pursuing a degree related to transportation and who has demonstrated academic merit and leadership skills.

Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) — Minnesota 

The Minnesota Land of Lakes Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Scholarship Committee seeks qualified candidates for the Floyd Forsberg Environmental Scholarship. Minnesota college students currently enrolled in environmental engineering, civil engineering, environmental health, environmental sciences, soil science, solid waste management or other environmental related programs at post high school educational institutions located in Minnesota with sophomore standing or higher are eligible to apply.

Structural Engineers Foundation (SEF)

SEF awards up to five scholarships, each in the amount of $3,000. One of the scholarships, the Max Zar scholarship, will be awarded to students enrolled in a school in Illinois. We also have a scholarship directed for students of Hispanic descent. Applicants will be evaluated on scholarship, leadership, and academic involvement.

Stantec Equity & Diversity Scholarship

Stantec is committed to providing a platform to support the next generation of leaders and champions in our industry, and is focused on growing diversity within the science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) fields. Stantec is committed to providing people in historically underrepresented and Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC) groups with financial aid and plans to award $200,000 globally for the annual academic year.

Women's Transportation Seminar (WTS) Minnesota

Every year WTS Minnesota offers three scholarships to encourage women to pursue a career in transportation-related fields.

Additional Scholarships available through the University of Minnesota

In recognition of outstanding academic achievements, the University offers a number of scholarships for incoming freshmen entering the University fall semester. These highly competitive awards range from $1,000 for one year to $48,000 over four years.
