Alumnus Alan Hargens receives Nicolas Andry Award

Alumnus Alan Hargens (chemistry '66), Ph.D., has received the Nicolas Andrey Award from the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons. He is professor and director of the Orthopaedic Clinical Physiology Lab at University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine.

Hargens and Dr. Scott Mubarak, emeritus director of the Orthopedics & Scoliosis Division at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego and a clinical professor at UC San Diego School of Medicine, are honored their research on the wick catheter technique that capable of capable of important clinical applications in the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic compartment syndromes. Their research spawned many high quality animal and human studies of tissue pressures. The Nicolas Andry Award recognizes that huge body of work and its contribution to animal and human advances in the field of in vivo and in vitro tissue pressure measurement. Hargens and Mubarak will present their work at the 2020 annual meeting of the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons.

Nicolas Andry de Bois-Regard was a French physician and writer. He played a significant role in the early history of orthopedics, the name for which is taken from Andry's book Orthopédie. He is regarded as the first orthopedic surgeon.
