Smith Professor Erin Carlson wins 2024 Cottrell SEED Award

MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (8/7/2024) – Smith Professor of Chemistry Erin Carlson is among 11 accomplished researchers selected to receive Research Corporation for Science Advancement’s Cottrell Plus SEED Award for 2024. The competitive SEED (Singular Exceptional Endeavors of Discovery) Award is designed to support members of the Cottrell Scholar community in high-impact research activities. Each award is $60,000. Carlson's award is in the New Research Directions category and seeks to develop new methods to overcome bacterial resistance to antibiotics.

The Carlson research group is highly multidisciplinary and members gain expertise in many areas including organic synthesis, mass spectrometry, probe and inhibitor design, chemical proteomics, metabolomics, microbiology, biochemistry, imaging and molecular and cellular biology. The group's primary research goal is to identify new ways to treat bacterial infection and to more deeply understand how nature has generated tiny organisms that can do almost anything! Since arriving at the University of Minnesota in 2014, Carlson has advised more than 50 students and postdoctoral associates. For her outstanding contributions to the department, she was promoted to the endowed position of Smith Professor of Chemistry in 2021.
