Breakthrough collaborative research on metal oxide thin films published in 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘕𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺

May 23, 2023 - A University of Minnesota Twin Cities-led team has developed a first-of-its-kind, breakthrough method that makes it easier to create high-quality metal oxide thin films out of “stubborn” metals that have historically been difficult to synthesize in an atomically precise manner.

Paulina Eberts claims second place at 2023 Midwest Association of Graduate Schools Three-Minute Thesis Competition

May 17, 2023 - After winning both the First Place and People's Choice Awards at the University of Minnesota's 2022 Three-Minute Thesis Competition, CEMS graduate student Paulina Eberts represented the University at the 2023 Midwest Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) regional competition on March 31, 2023 in Chicago, placing second out of 50 participants for her presentation, "Decoding blood-brain barrier dysfunction in Alzheimer’s disease."

May 16, 2023 - Several CEMS graduate students were awarded Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships (DDF) for academic year 2023-2024 in a University-wide competition sponsored by the University of Minnesota Graduate School. CEMS recipients include: Atharva Chikhalikar (ChE, Poerschke group), Rashmi Choudhary (MSE, Jalan group), Ryan Collanton (ChE, Dorfman group), Matthew Hausladen (MSE, Ellison and Francis groups), Benjamin Robertson (ChE, Calabrese group), Mayank Tanwar (ChE, Neurock group) and Joseph Vallin (ChE, Azarin group).

Leighton Group Collaborative Nanomagnetism Research Published in Science

May 9, 2023 - In collaboration with Yale University and Los Alamos National Lab, graduate student Justin Ramberger and CEMS faculty member Chris Leighton recently published a landmark result in nanomagnetism in the journal Science. Their work deals with arrays of nanomagnets known as artificial spin ice, which are engineered to be an ideal playground for the exploration of frustrated magnetism.

CEMS students win 2023 CSE Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Leadership Showcase awards

May 2, 2023 - CEMS undergraduate student Minali Ganguly (MSE '23) and graduate students Spencer Bingham (fourth-year MSE graduate student) and Marisa Bazzi (fifth-year MSE graduate student) were recently honored among the recipients of the 2023 College of Science and Engineering (CSE) Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Leadership Showcase awards. The awards were presented at an April 26 recognition event highlighting the many campus contributions of individuals who actively contribute to a positive and more equitable College of Science and Engineering climate through diversity, equity, and inclusion events, programming, and volunteer work.

Apr 18, 2023 - We were pleased to welcome Dr. Gilda Barabino, President of Olin College of Engineering, to the department as the 9th annual Amundson Lecturer last week. She delivered her seminar, "Impact-Centered Research and Education: View from a Chemical Engineer," on April 13. The concept of impact-centered research and education is focused on creating real-world authentic impact in service of society and making the world a better place.
