Researchers were able to report the activation of C2 and C3 alkanes over well-defined, mononuclear iron sites situated within the nodes of a MOF that bear similar nuclearity, oxidation state (+2), and spin state (S=2) to iron centers in certain enzymes that activate alkanes oxidatively.

Alumna Tina Arrowood, principal research scientist at Minneapolis-based DuPont Water Solutions, has delivered a Ted Talk on, "A circular economy for salt that keeps rivers clean."

Erin Carlson, a University of Minnesota chemistry associate professor, led the team from the NSF Center for Sustainable Technology that that showed for the first time that non-antibacterial nanoparticles can cause resistance in bacteria.

University of Minnesota receives $20M grant for sustainable plastics research

The University of Minnesota was awarded a $20 million grant renewal from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for research in the NSF Center for Sustainable Polymers focused on discoveries of the next generation of environment-friendly plastics. The funding also includes an educational component to build awareness surrounding the impacts of plastics on our environment.
