NMR Training
NMR training level one: AX-400
This training is required for all users who are new to the Department of Chemistry NMR laboratory.
You will be trained to operate a Bruker 400 MHz NMR spectrometer running in full automation (nickname: AX-400), which will give you access to routine one-dimensional 1H, 11B, 13C, 19F, and 31P experiments, plus COSY (1H-1H and 1H-19F), HSQC (1H-13C and 1H-15N), HMBC (1H-13C and 1H-15N), NOESY, etc.
Prerequisite: Please watch the autosampler loading video and review NMR Laboratory Safety, NMR Usage, and NMR Sample Preparation.
Please complete this google form to sign up for training (note: this form is only accessible to UMN personnel--please access it using your @umn.edu account). This introductory training is generally done in small groups and it is typically scheduled when three or more people are waiting or within two weeks of any individual training request--one of the NMR laboratory teaching assistants will contact you directly to schedule the training session.
Cost: $24 per person
NMR training level 1b: NC-400
The NMR laboratory houses a (second) Bruker 400 MHz NMR spectrometer run in full automation (nickname: NC-400) that is used to meet the Department of Chemistry's teaching needs. When this spectrometer is not being used for teaching purposes, it can be used for research purposes.
The NC-400 is configured to run the same types of experiments as the AX-400: routine one-dimensional 1H, 11B, 13C, 19F, and 31P experiments, plus COSY (1H-1H and 1H-19F), HSQC (1H-13C and 1H-15N), HMBC (1H-13C and 1H-15N), NOESY, etc.
The main differences between the NC-400 and the AX-400 are: the NC-400 is more sensitive than the AX-400 and the NC-400 autosampler can handle (short) valved (e.g. J. Young) tubes.
Prerequisite: NMR training level one: AX-400**
If you would like to gain access to the NC-400, please complete this google form.
Cost: to be determined. I expect the cost to be no greater than that of NMR training level one: AX-400.
**You must complete NMR training level one: AX-400 before you can move forward with NC-400 training. The NC-400 training session only covers the operational differences between the AX-400 and NC400, as well as policies that are specific to the NC-400 because of its teaching usage.
NMR training level two: [HD-500] and/or [AM-400 & AV-500]
Prerequisite: NMR training level one: AX-400
Note: NMR training level 1b: NC-400 is NOT a prerequisite for NMR training level two.
Please complete the application for NMR training level two (most answers are found on the NMR laboratory website -- read the manuals).
Level 2a: Access to the automated 500 MHz, HD-500:
After satisfactory completion of the above application, one of the NMR teaching assistants (TA) or the NMR laboratory director will give you a brief introduction to the HD-500. After this brief introduction, you will have access to the HD-500.
Level 2b: Access to the manual spectrometers (if you want it), AM-400 and/or AV-500:
After satisfactory completion of the above application, if you want access to the manually-operated spectrometers (please indicate this on the application), one of the NMR teaching assistants will schedule a small-group manually-operated NMR spectrometer training session with you. Within thirty calendar days of completing the TA training session, please schedule a brief checkout session with the NMR laboratory director (you will acquire a spectrum with the director’s supervision; you will be asked a few questions, and you will be given the opportunity to ask any questions you might have). After the checkout session with the NMR laboratory director, you will have access to the AM-400 and AV-500. Please note: Users must demonstrate competence on entry level (routine) NMR before pursuing subsequent training for DOSY, variable temperature, etc.
Cost: $54 per person
