Video: Mini-lab tour for undergraduate organic labs

Our laboratory maintains five nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers.

Bruker Avance III HD 500 (HD-500)

Bruker Avance III HD 500 (HD-500)

The Bruker Avance III HD 500 is a 2-channel spectrometer with a shielded Ascend magnet. There is one probe available, a 5mm Prodigy TCI cryoprobe with z-axis gradients: Proton S/N: 2500:1, Carbon S/N: 350:1, and Fluorine S/N: 2000:1. This instrument is running under full automation mode with a SampleXpress autosampler. Limited high temperature is available. Contact facility staff if non-automated experiments must be run. The magnet sits on a Technical Manufacturing Corporation vibration table to protect it from light rail vibrations. The magnet and samplechanger were installed in 2011, and the console and Prodigy probe were installed in July 2013. It is located in 194 Kolthoff Hall.

Bruker Avance III 500 (AV-500)

Bruker Avance III 500 (AV-500)

The Bruker Avance III 500 is a three-channel spectrometer with a shielded Ascend magnet. Two probes are available. One probe is the 5mm BBFO "SmartProbe" with z-axis gradients (currently in magnet): Proton S/N: 730:1, Carbon S/N: 250:1, Fluorine S/N: 550:1, and Phosphorus S/N: 180:1. The second is a 5mm TBO triple resonance PFG probe capable of C13 detection with simultaneous H1 and F19 decoupling: Proton S/N: 280:1, Carbon S/N: 220:1, Fluorine S/N: 220:1, and Phosphorus S/N: 140:1. Probe changes must be scheduled with the NMR Lab staff. Variable temperature (+/- 150C) is available. This instrument is run in manual mode, but automation is available with a SampleCase autosampler. The console and probes were installed in December 2011, and magnet and samplechanger were installed in 2013. It is located in 196 Kolthoff Hall.

Bruker Avance III HD 400 (AM-400)

Bruker Avance III HD 400 (AM-400)

The Bruker Avance III HD nanobay AM-400 is a 2-channel spectrometer with a shielded Ascend magnet. It was installed in May 2015, and is located in 194 Kolthoff Hall. A 5 mm BBO SmartProbe with z-axis gradients is in use: Proton S/N: 480:1, Carbon S/N: 200:1, Fluorine S/N: 500:1, and Phosphorus S/N: 150:1. The probe can be tuned to almost any NMR-active nucleus. Variable temperature (+/- 150C) is available.

Bruker Avance Neo

Bruker Avance Neo (NC-400)

The Bruker Avance Neo nanobay NC-400 is a two-channel spectrometer with an Ultrashield 400 magnet (circa 2006) and a SampleCase Plus 60-slot autosampler. It was installed in September 2020 and is located in 196 Kolthoff Hall. An iProbe with z-axis gradients is in use. Proton S/N: 550:1, Carbon S/N: 250:1, Fluorine S/N: 550:1, Phosphorus S/N: 200:1. It was purchased for the undergraduate teaching labs and is run in full automation mode.
