Characteristic minerals, melts, and fluids are concentrated in different parts of the Earth and may experience tremendous change as they cycle through different regions of the planet. Changes such as deformation and chemical reactions (melting, metamorphism) can be investigated even long after the transformation occurred by analyzing minerals from natural samples or conducting experiments on natural or synthetic materials in a laboratory.
