CO2 Removal from Air and Permanent Solid Storage
"Carbon Mineralization
for CO2 Removal from Air
and Permanent Solid Storage"
with
Peter Kelemen
Earth and Environmental Sciences, Columbia University
ABSTRACT: Natural alteration and weathering of rocks from the Earth’s deep interior - the mantle - spontaneously combine Mg and Ca from rocks with CO2 from fluids and air to form solid carbonate minerals. Kelemen will describe studies of the natural process, and research aimed at developing engineered methods that emulate natural processes but are accelerated to mitigate significant amounts of CO2 via CO2 removal from air and/or permanent solid storage. Kelemen will also touch upon how much such engineered processes might cost, and how much they might be worth.
