Dominik Schillinger receives Presidential Award

Assistant Professor Dominik Schillinger of the Department of Civil Environmental, and Geo- Engineering was chosen as a recipient of a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). The PECASE Award “embodies the high priority placed by the government on maintaining the leadership position of the United States in science by producing outstanding scientists and engineers and nurturing their continued development. The Awards identify a cadre of outstanding scientists and engineers who will broadly advance science and the missions important to the participating agencies” (PECASE).

Upon receiving this honor Dominik Schillinger noted, “I am very happy about the award (of course), but I also feel very grateful to my department, our college, and the entire University of Minnesota that have provided such a great environment for me to grow and succeed over the last few years. I cannot image a better place for starting an academic career as a faculty.”

Schillinger has received several prestigeous awards including the ICE Zienkiewicz Prize and Medal (2014), the GAMM Richard-von-Nises Prize (2015), and an NSF CAREER Award (2017).

Schillinger’s research interests are in computational mechanics. He works on the development and implementation of novel discretization techniques for the analysis of solids, structures, and fluids that overcome limitations of today's standard numerical tools. He states his particular interests are “in isogeometric immersed boundary and collocation methods, that combine higher order accuracy and robustness with efficient ways of incorporating very complex geometric models and are attractive for large-scale parallel computing.” The main applications driving Schillinger’s work are from biomechanics, engineering mechanics, and structural dynamics.

PECASE is awarded by the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC). Participating agencies include the US Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Defense, Energy, Education, Health and Human Services: National Institutes of Health, and Veterans Affairs, as well as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Science Foundation. The 2019 PECASE recipients were announced on July 2 by the President of the United States.
