EWB-UMN’s Outstanding Service Awarded

The student chapter EWB-UMN received the UMN Annual Tony Diggs Excellence Award for Outstanding Service/Philanthropic Project of the Year. The group completed several international projects: Water Supply and Agricultural Development in Guatemala, Water Distribution in Ethiopia, Rainwater Harvesting and System Maintenance in Uganda, Water Supply and Filtration in Bolivia, and a research project on Appropriate Technologies.

Some student members are able to travel and work on the projects overseas, but even students who do not travel are involved in the projects in significant ways. Throughout the year, EWB-UMN holds project meetings and organizes events to reach out to the community and raise funds. Students plan and designing projects, raise funds, and conduct research. They receive mentoring from professionals and gain experience with environmental sustainability, cross-cultural interactions, international development projects. Through all this, they are strengthening their skills in leadership, engineering, and communication—tools essential for their future careers. The depth of experience EWB-UMN provides helps students become globally responsible, experienced engineers. Membership in the national organization EWB-USA allows continued involvement throughout their professional engineering careers.
