Danae Galan Covarrubias receives four-year doctoral scholarship from Mexican government program

MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (10/20/2023) – Second-year graduate student Danae Galan Covarrubias has been awarded a Consejo Nacional de Humanidades Ciencias y Tecnologías (CONAHCYT) (English translation: National Council for Humanities, Sciences, and Technologies of Mexico) scholarship to support her pursuit of a PhD in Mathematics at the University of Minnesota.

Danae came to the School of Mathematics in Fall 2022 after completing her BS in Applied Mathematics at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) in Mexico City, Mexico. Advised by Prof. Will Leeb, she’s pursuing her interests in data science, statistical, and machine learning problems. “Currently, I am studying a multi-scale regression algorithm, and I am running numerical tests to gain insight into its accuracy in different parameter regimes,” Danae said.

CONAHCYT – the institution of the Mexican government responsible for establishing public policies on humanities, science, technology and innovation throughout the country – aims to strengthen the scientific sovereignty and technological independence of Mexico under the principles of humanism, equity, social well-being, environmental care, and conservation of biocultural heritage. The CONAHCYT Doctoral Scholarships Abroad program, which provides financial support to Mexican citizens pursuing PhD programs outside of Mexico, is one of many strategies the institution implements in service of its mission and to form a network of partnerships with global universities.

“During my first year at the University of Minnesota, I had the opportunity to explore areas of mathematical applications that I was not familiar with, but that I found fascinating. I am very excited to receive CONAHCYT support to pursue my doctoral studies; I’m motivated to continue working on my project and learn new things every day,” Danae said.
