Research & Centers
Research
Our research spans the complete spectrum of mathematics. The School of Mathematics is home to experts in algebra, analysis, data science, mathematical biology, combinatorics, and much more. Research opportunities are available for graduate level students, postdoctoral associates, as well as undergraduate researchers.
Centers
The School of Mathematics is home to several centers for specialized research and education.

Minnesota Center for Industrial Mathematics (MCIM)
Minnesota Center for Industrial Mathematics (MCIM)
MCIM works to position students to become leaders in either industry or academia and foster research collaborations between industrial and academic researchers. The center hosts the Industrial Problems Seminar in collaboration with the IMA.
Director: Gilad Lerman

Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA)
Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA)
The IMA connects scientists, engineers, and mathematicians in order to address scientific and technological challenges in a collaborative, engaging environment. Center collaborators develop transformative, new mathematics and explore its applications, while working to train the next generation of researchers and educators. The IMA hosts the Data Science Seminar and the Industrial Problems seminar.
Director: Daniel Spirn

Minnesota Center for Financial and Actuarial Mathematics (MCFAM)
Minnesota Center for Financial and Actuarial Mathematics (MCFAM)
MCFAM is home to the Master of Financial Mathematics program, the Fundamentals of Quantitative Finance certificate program, and supports the School of Mathematics undergraduate specialization in actuarial science. Students benefit from faculty and industry practitioners with extensive industry expertise in risk analytics, data science and portfolio optimization within finance and related domains.
Director: Rina Ashkenazi

Mathematics Center for Educational Programs (MathCEP)
Mathematics Center for Educational Programs (MathCEP)
MathCEP is dedicated to educational outreach. The center's mission is to develop educational materials and programs for mathematics students and instructors at all levels. They interact with the broader mathematical community in a variety of ways, including professional development and resources for instructors, enrichment and outreach programs for K-12 students, and more.
Director: Jonathan Rogness

Therapy Modeling & Design Center (TMDC)
Therapy Modeling & Design Center (TMDC)
TMDC – jointly run by the Biomedical Engineering, Mathematics, and Industrial & Systems Engineering departments – fosters inclusive collaboration between modelers and scientists engaged in therapy development. While the center is still in its early stages, the founding scientists envision a network of faculty working across departments and colleges united by a shared mission focused on applying mathematical modeling to accelerate UMN translational and clinical research.
