Xue Feng Receives NSF Career Award
Posted
Feng’s research has two main goals—to discover new ways that water shapes the ecosystem response to climate change, and to use that new knowledge to advance modeling of Earth systems and climate predictions.
AVs and Traffic Flow
Posted
RAPHAEL STERN researches vehicle automation and transportation cyber-physical systems. He is specifically interested in the impact of autonomous (or semi-autonomous) vehicles on the overall traffic flow and dynamics at low market penetration rates.
AVs and Intersections
Posted
MICHAEL LEVIN has been working on a new traffic signal timing method that is computationally easy to implement, yet still has favorable impacts across an entire traffic system. Levin’s research focuses
on modeling connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) and intelligent transportation systems to predict and optimize how these future technologies will affect travel demand and traffic flow. He uses traffic flow, transportation network analysis.
AVs and Transit
Posted
ALIREZA KHANI is a transit enthusiast with a background in engineering. His research focus is on modeling the impacts of emerging technologies on public transit systems, and optimization of the system for more efficient and reliable service. He uses network modeling and optimization techniques.
Three CEGE faculty research automated vehicles
Posted
Automated vehicle technologies are closer and more practical than ever before. They promise numerous and broad benefits in terms of safety and efficiency. The next steps are to integrate these new technologies safely into our existing transportation infrastructure. In CEGE, researchers Alireza Khani, Michael Levin, and Raphael Stern are studying the integration of autonomous vehicles (AVs) with transit, intersection controls, and traffic streams.
New Fund Established: Heuer Soils Lab Operations Fund
Posted
Michael M. and Nancy L. Heuer Soil Mechanics Laboratory Operations Fund was established by alumnus Michael Heuer.
Renee Sailor, a student and a leader
Posted
“I never specifically sought out leadership roles, but as I pursued what I liked, things tend to work out that way.” At the University of Minnesota, Sailor took on leadership roles in several groups. Sailor has been part of Steel Bridge Team, treasurer of APWA, and is currently Captain of the Concrete Canoe Team and President of ASCE Student Chapter.
Bret Weiss Takes Action to Diversify CE
Posted
Bret Weiss (P.E., BCE 1987) realized that if his company, WSB, wanted to hire under-represented groups, it couldn’t rely on referrals from existing employees, nor count on technical school programs, which can be prohibitively expensive. They needed to recruit and introduce people to the field. After two years of planning, WSB launched a four-month, free-of-charge evening class in surveying and materials testing. It offers a stepping stone to high-demand jobs.
Understanding Spread of COVID-19 through Network Theory
Posted
In a normal year, Raphael Stern would be studying the impact of self-driving cars on traffic flow—specifically, how these patterns will change in the future as society uses more autonomous vehicles. This year, the College of Science and Engineering assistant professor is putting his efforts into a more immediate problem: COVID-19.
Remembering Jack Braun
Posted
John Stephen "Jack" Braun (BCE 1956, MS 1957) died December 12, 2020. He was 87.
