Feeling blessed by the opportunities, challenges, and successes of a life in structural engineering, Daniel Murphy (BCE 1974) is committed to shaping a positive future for the field of engineering, especially for young people just getting started. In a recent interview, murphy shared how he came to this view and how it is woven into the culture at Meyer Borgman Johnson (MBJ), a structural design and engineering firm.

Juan Lopez is a junior. He transferred from Normandale Community College in Bloomington, which is near his high school and where he was awarded two years of full tuition. This year Lopez received a scholarship through ACEC.

Keane Nowlan is a senior and will be graduating in May 2020. He grew up in the Twin Cities and worked alongside his father in his custom cabinetry business.

Emma O'Leary (BCE 2018) is a graduate student. She will be completing her Master’s of Science degree in May 2020. Having a father who is an environmental engineer, she was always aware of that as a career possibility.

Xue Feng conducts research to build understanding of the movement of water and carbon within terrestrial ecosystems, like forests and peatlands. She is interested in how that movement will affect the global climate.

Carol Shield Recognized for Service and Leadership

Carol Shield, CSE Distinguished Professor, was recognized for her outstanding service to the concrete profession at the 69th Annual Concrete Conference, December 5, 2019, in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. Shield has devoted more than 20 years of service to the American Concrete Institute (ACI), in particular, through her work with ACI Committee 440 FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) Reinforcement. Shield served as chair from 2009-2015. During that time, she led a committee of more than 200 members, 60 voting members, and 11 subcommittees. Shield is currently working on the ACI 318 Structural Concrete Building Code equivalent for FRP.
