In addition to selecting a rigorous major in geoengineering, Kat Hetico is a Division 1 athlete competing on the UMN Women’s Crew Team.

CEGE welcomes a new transportation engineer to the faculty, Raphael Stern. Stern will study and teach topics at the intersection of technology and transportation including autonomous vehicles. Of particular interest to Stern is how technologies such as increased vehicle automation will influence transportation.

Board Chair Nirmal Jain, PE, and Immediate Past Chair Dennis Martensen, PE, were please to present on behalf of NCEES an award to the Department of Civil, Environment, and Geo-Engineering (CEGE) at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. The students and their university advisors and professional mentors won for their project, a multistage drip irrigation system.

In this issue we share perspectives of two students with global experience. Mariah Dooley, from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has travelled, studied, and worked in Spanish-speaking countries. Edwin Jarquin Martinez earned an architecture degree in his native Nicaragua. He came to the University of Minnesota to earn his second degree in civil engineering.
