Abstract

With advances in programmable data plane, networks are far more flexible with configurable network functionality. At the same time, applications have also become increasingly complex, with diverse quality-of-experience requirements. We outline a Semantically Aware, Mission-Oriented (SAMO) networking framework for application-network integration. SAMO incorporates a per-packet, host-application-to-network-application signaling mechanism, enabling networks to quickly adapt to the changing network state in accordance with application semantics. It is designed for" unmanaged" environments, targeting many industrial Internet-of-Things (IoT) and military environments and applications.
