UMN Machine Learning Seminar: Attention is not all you need

The UMN Machine Learning Seminar Series brings together faculty, students, and local industrial partners who are interested in the theoretical, computational, and applied aspects of machine learning, to pose problems, exchange ideas, and foster collaborations. The talks are every Wednesday from 12 p.m. - 1 p.m. during the Spring 2022 semester.

This week's speaker, Yihe Dong (Google), will be giving a talk titled "Attention is not all you need."

Abstract

I will be talking about our recent work on better understanding attention. Attention-based architectures have become ubiquitous in machine learning, yet our understanding of the reasons for their effectiveness remains limited. We show that self-attention possesses a strong inductive bias towards "token uniformity". Specifically, without skip connections or multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs), the output converges doubly exponentially to a rank-1 matrix. On the other hand, skip connections and MLPs stop the output from degeneration. Along the way, we develop a useful decomposition of attention architectures. This is joint work with Jean-Baptiste Cordonnier and Andreas Loukas.

Biography

Yihe Dong is a machine learning researcher and engineer at Google, with interests in geometric deep learning and natural language processing.

Code Freeze 2022

A day-long software engineering symposium

The University of Minnesota Software Engineering Center (UMSEC) in partnership with Cprime host the 17th Annual Code Freeze Conference on January 13, 2022.

The 2022 theme is Developer Experience.

As companies compete in the digital economy, the need for software and pace of disruption is ever accelerating. Developers are being asked to produce more, faster in systems with increasing complexity and scale. Developer Experience (DevEx), with the perspective of developer’s encounter with their environment, systems and code, is emerging as a discipline of note. Code Freeze 2022 examines the ever more critical role DevEx plays in an organization. With an eye to developers as customers, Code Freeze 2022 will explore platforms, systems, and tools as well as how the business itself handles development through exciting and illuminating keynotes, workshops and breakouts by leaders in the industry.

Watch the UMSEC website for the schedule and other program details.

Application deadline for the Ph.D. program

The application deadline for the computer science Ph.D. program is January 5.

Please note: to be considered for fellowships, applications must be submitted by December 15.

Applications must be submitted online. Before applying, students should review the application procedures.

Integrated program applications open

The application for the computer science integrated program (Bachelor's/Master's) opens January 1. The application deadline for a fall semester start is March 15.

This is exclusively available to students officially admitted to the College of Science & Engineering Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Science, Bachelor’s of Computer Engineering, the College of Liberal Arts Bachelor’s of Arts in Computer Science, and the College of Liberal Arts Second Major in Computer Science. The program allows students with strong academic performance records to take additional credits (up to 16 credits) at undergraduate tuition rates during their last few semesters which can be applied towards the Computer Science M.S. program.

Applicants must have at least 75 credits completed at the time of their application. Read more about the program eligibility requirements.

Applications must be submitted online. Before applying, students should review the application procedures.

Students will be notified of the outcome of their application via email by June 1 for a fall start. In some cases, an admission decision will be put on hold until semester grades are finalized. Students will be notified if their application is on hold.

University closed

The University of Minnesota will be closed in observance of New Year's Day.
