HCC Seminar Series: "The Future of Computing is AI" (and other lies)
Abstract
Bold statements about the state of digital technology, such as “Privacy is dead” and “The future of computing is AI”, often gain traction in popular media. While there is often some truth to these statements, they are often interpreted through a techno-centric lens that lacks important nuance. In this talk I present a selection of my past and recent research that provides a more nuanced socio-technical perspective. By the end of the talk, I hope to convince you that the future of computing is human, and that the path forward requires a coordinated agenda of cumulative contributions to the science of human-centered computing.

He is an expert in privacy decision-making and the user-centric evaluation of user-adaptive (AI) systems. Since joining Clemson, Bart’s research has been awarded over $3,300,000 in funding from the National Science Foundation (including a CAREER award), the Department of Defense, the Department of Education, the Department of Justice, and corporate gifts. Bart has published in top conferences and journals including the ACM conference on human factors in computing systems (SigCHI), the international journal of human-computer studies (IJHCS), the User Modeling and User-Adapted Interactions journal (UMUAI) and the ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interactions (ToCHI). He recently completed a nine month part-time assignment as a Visiting Researcher at Google Research.
